Chapter Eleven

The three stood silently in the morgue, staring at the severed head. Kasey hadn't really had a good chance to look at it in the light yet. In the sewers, she had still been fighting for her life. Even once it was down, she’d had no desire to dawdle around and wait for his friends. Now beneath the bright surgical lights of the morgue, she could see the vampire in all its gory glory.

The head was humanoid, but the man it had once been was long gone, twisted into a cruel parody of life by the curse of endless night. Its skin was a pale sickly white but for the scorch marks from Kasey's fire. The lower half of its maw seemed distended, the creature’s teeth tapered into points, and a prominent pair of fangs replaced what would have been canines in a human’s upper jaw. The creature’s nose was flatter than a human, like much of the cartilage was missing. It was as if the creature had been hit in the face with a frying pan. Its skin was sunken and clung to the contours of its skull. Oily hair clung to his scalp in stringy but sparse clumps.

“I told you,” Bishop started, a smile spreading across her lips.

Kasey raised a hand to slow her roll. “There is no evidence that this creature attacked Vince.”

“Look at those teeth,” Bishop replied, pointing at the deadly fangs protruding from the creature’s upper lip.

Vida bent down and ran a finger down the wicked teeth. “Kasey's right though. If this thing had taken a bite out of old Vince, it would have left a heck of a lot more mess. His wounds are too clean. Our friend here would have opened him right up.”

Kasey gave a little self-satisfied grin, while Bishop looked at the creature in slack-jawed amazement.

Vida’s eyes lit up, his hand reaching for the severed head.

“An honest to goodness vampire. What are the chances. I mean, you watch a movie and you dream, but then the movie ends and you’ve got to go back to the real world. I’ve always loved vampires. I’ve seen Dracula…” He paused. “I don't even know how many times.”

“They are considerably less charming when it’s your neck they are trying to tear out,” Kasey said, leaning over the table.

Vida swallowed a large awkward gulp. “Yeah, fair enough, but this one is dead, right? I mean, they haven't got any crazy death cheating supernatural voodoo that we should be worried about?”

“They can take a beating,” Kasey replied, “but put a stake through the heart or take one's head off. That'll do the job nicely. He's not coming back.”

“Righty--o then.” Vida resumed his poking and prodding at the creature’s skull, his hands straying near the vampire’s teeth as he examined its maw.

“Watch the teeth,” Kasey replied, reaching out to push Vida’s hand back. “The saliva has a potent narcotic effect. Acts like a cocktail of anesthetic and ecstasy, numbs their prey while stimulating the pleasure centers of the brain.
